“The thought of managing my own finances used to intimidate me. This trepidation prevented me from gaining clear insight into my spending habits. Growing up in a low-income household, my general way of ‘managing’ finances was to operate with the notion of scarcity, even though I was building a career in professional services. I also retained the mentality of living paycheck to paycheck.

Speaking with Ani empowered me to take charge of my finances, beginning with analyzing what I was truly spending money on, and identifying opportunities to save money. Over the last year, I’ve made strategic sacrifices so that I now have a small emergency fund and feel like I’m spending my resources on the things that matter most to me, such as travel and adventures.

A specific example is her encouragement to find an apartment that cost less money; I devoted those savings to travel and towards paying my undergraduate and graduate student loans off more aggressively, instead of paying just the minimum each month.

More broadly, she has helped me think of budgeting more in terms of percentages as opposed to finite dollar values, allowing me to adjust my expenses regularly depending on the goals and priorities I’d set for that time period. For example, I attended a series of weddings this year. Instead of stressing out about how much each trip cost, I proactively planned for each one and made cuts on other variable expenses accordingly.”
